Music samples included on Neon MK2 image

I just found out (by making a verbose backup) that mp3 music fragments of 30 seconds are included on the neon MK2 images.
In fact, they are there TWICE
Both unpacked and in a hidden zip file

I think one instance of the music is enough. (get rid of the “.zip” file)

Given the whole legal battle of Mycroft, I wouldn’t go anywhere near a new legal battle with neon.

Given the location - the Neon user’s cache folder - I’m guessing this is an oversight, rather than a misunderstanding of copyright law. Something got swept up in the build process that was only meant for the testing process.

Thank you @fromport & @ChanceNCounter for you support. Yes, absolutely no copyright infringement is intended.

We did have a team member choose some music samples from one of the larger free music websites, but they were all meant to have been public domain / rights released for non-commercial use.

From your articles, I see it is a very complex issue, and the music may have been listed as free to use, but not meant free for just anyone to use. Our team will take a closer look at the rights status of the specific music files this week, to see if we or the website we got it from misunderstood the rights, and remove it if there seem to be any issues. I’ll update here with what we find out and do about it.

Music is such a desired feature, and has been so difficult to offer options for, so with such a lot of empty space on the SSD drives we were exploring the option of including a library of public domain / free to share music with the Neon AI OS.

What does that mean ?
That all the music on the mk2 images was sourced from links mentioned in that URL ?

Following up here - no, I think that URL is a suggestion for better sources we might use.

We looked at the music files first thing Monday, and started to try to try to verify each one’s copyright status and read up on more details of how “fair use” might apply to our free OS. Very quickly our team realized that it was going to take up a large amount of time to even analyze which songs or samples might be okay for us to use and which might not be. Far more time in fact then it would take to replace the music samples.

So we’ve selected replacement music files from a more specifically copyright categorized and labeled source, freemusicarchive.org, and Daniel will replace the existing music samples, probably in the next build. All the appropriate copyright and attribution information will be included for the music as well.

Also, for anyone worried about legal battles after what happened to Mycroft, I offer the reassurance that copyrights aren’t the kind of lawsuit minefield that patents can be. Neon AI is not at risk here, but it is of the utmost importance to us that we be able to be confident we’re acting ethically in all that we do. Thank you for helping us stay true to that value.

The link I posted with Chaka Khan album comes from the first link on that page.
I am pretty sure that is not in the public domain (yet).
So approach that page with some critical thinking as well !

So I am pretty sure a lot of the classical music will have no issue’s but there is Chaka Khan music on the mk2 and I wouldn’t be surprised that is not allowed (yet)

Search music on Free Music Archive - Free Music Archive does not show any results for Chaka Khan.
