Francis Govers is an autonomy engineer at Bell Helicopter, and designer of over 28 robots and unmanned vehicles for land, sea, air and space. He designed the Beagle CBRN robot and the Archer hybrid electric vehicle. He was a participant in the first DARPA Grand Challenge, and was a leader of the DARPA EATR (Energetically Autonomous Tactical Robot) program. Other notable positions: Lead Engineer for Command and Control for the International Space Station; engineer on the Space Shuttle and Shuttle Robot Arm; Director of the Advanced Simulation Laboratory; Head of Engineering Simulation for F-35; Special Missions Manager for Zeppelin at Airship Ventures; Professor at the Unmanned Vehicle University; served on the Board of Directors for the National Space Society; Chief Engineer for Elbit Systems of America; VP of Engineering for Sportvision, the creators of the “yellow line” for NFL football; developed in-car telemetry for NASCAR, IndyCar, and GrandAm. He is a regular contributor to New Atlas and Robot Magazine, on the editorial board of the International Journal of Unmanned Systems Engineering,and author of the upcoming book “Artificial Intelligence for Robotics”. Mr. Govers has a commercial pilot rating, and is a US Air Force veteran.
